Non-domestic learner information

Any non-domestic learners enrolling into a level 3 or above qualification, and who do not originate from either Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom, or the United States, may need to provide evidence of meeting English language proficiency requirements.

 

Te Mahi Ako has approval under the Tertiary and International Learners Code of Practice to enrol work-based non-domestic ākonga.
 
A Te Mahi Ako non-domestic ākonga is an individual employed in New Zealand on a: 
  • New Zealand Student Visa  
  • New Zealand Student Work Visa  
  • New Zealand Resident Visa 
  • New Zealand Working Holiday Visa  
  • New Zealand Accredited Employer Work Visa.

Enrolment criteria for non-domestic ākonga

  • Have a workplace to support your study 
  • Provide a copy of your visa information and current passport  
  • Meet NZQA English Language requirements (if enrolling in a New Zealand Certificate) 
  • Meet immigration requirements for studying on your visa.

NZQA english language requirements

Any non-domestic ākonga enrolling into a level 3 or above qualification need to provide evidence of meeting one of the following requirements.  
  • NCEA Level 3 with New Zealand University Entrance 
  • A Cambridge A-level qualification or International Baccalaureate Diploma taught and assessed in English 
  • The Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) or the Trinity College London Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL) 
  • A Bachelor’s degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours Degree, Post-graduate Certificate, Post-graduate Diploma, Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree with English as the language of instruction from a tertiary education provider from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States 
  • Prior schooling in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States. The student must have completed either 5 years of secondary education or all primary education and at least 3 years of secondary education in one of those countries, with English as the language of instruction. 20240503 Attestation Form.pdf
  • Evidence of completing an IELTS score of 5.5 (general or academic) with no individual band lower than 5 from one test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules: https://www2.nzqa.govt.nz/tertiary/english-language-entry-requirements-for-international-students/
